•A novel adsorbent material, phosphonated Halomonas Levan (PhHL), was synthesized.•Adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA) by PhHL was studied.•Adsorption mechanism was elucidated with XPS and FTIR analyses.•OH- and CH-pi interactions were found to be effective in the adsorption mechanism.•PhHL holds a potential as an adsorbent for BPA.
