•Calibration of TIR radiometers against absolute reference standards is necessary.•CIMEL 312 radiometers showed absolute accuracy of 0.1–0.2 K depending on the band.•Temperature-emissivity separation method for ground LST and emissivity measurements.•We provided a detailed error analysis of radiometric temperatures and ground LSTs.•Accurate emissivity measurements necessary for accurate ground LST measurements.
