•Participants exposed to eye movements exhibited reduced N100 and P200 responses to targets.•Inconsistent handers generally presented greater accuracy and faster RTs on the ANT.•Consistent handers displayed greater improvements after altering and orienting cues.•Eye movements may enhance cognition by altering alerting and executive attention.
