•Research on the efficacy of brief behavioral treatment for insomnia (BBTi) is limited.•Older adults completed four sessions of BBTi or self-monitoring control.•BBTi improved sleep onset, wake after sleep onset, sleep efficiency, and sleep quality.•BBTi did not improve cognition, and it reduced depression to a degree same as that of controls.•BBTi is an efficacious intervention for reducing insomnia symptoms in older adults.
