•Taenia solium possess four enolase isoforms.•The emergence of flatworm enolase isoforms (A, B and C) was independent to the emergence of their vertebrate counterparts.•Taenia solium enolase isoform A binds and activates human plasminogen.•Taenia solium enolase isoform A could be involved in parasite establishment and migration.
