•Different infrastructural designs affect delay of different cyclist groups differently.•Faster cyclists are delayed more when the infrastructure requires a stop.•Comfort cyclists are delayed more when negotiating a mixed-traffic intersection.•Using “natural speed” for normalisation enables fair efficiency comparisons.
