Effective and efficient agricultural drainage pipe mapping with UAS thermal infrared imagery: A case study

•Effective and efficient methods are needed for mapping agricultural drainage pipes.•Unmanned aircraft system (UAS) sensors have potential for drainage pipe mapping.•With dry soils, UAS visible and near infrared sensors did not detect drainage pipes.•With dry soils, a UAS thermal infrared sensor mapped 60% of the drainage pipes.
