Performance and energy metrics for multi-threaded applications on DVFS processors

•This article combines frequency scaling and thread-parallelism and proposes several new metrics for the evaluation of an application's performance and energy consumption.•The diverse performance and energy behavior is illustrated by experiments for the PARSEC and SPLASH-2 benchmark suite, which provide an up-to-date collection of applications with different workloads on chip-multiprocessors.•All metrics introduced are applied to these benchmarks.•Intel Core i7 processors are used as hardware platforms for the evaluation as well as an ARM architecture.
