•Basic emotions were identified above chance from FL, PL and SW walkers.•The gender of the walker influenced the perception of the displayed emotions.•Display format influenced how much walker gender effected emotion identifications.•Constructed SW point-light walkers controlled for form and idiosyncratic movements.•Emotional expression and perception have been untangled.
