•Cropping System Model-CERES-Maize was calibrated over a wide range of nitrogen and irrigation regimes.•Model has potential to simulate maize phenology, growth and yield.•The strategy analysis tool of DSSAT was run for economic analysis of maize inputs.•The modeled genetic coefficients might be helpful for plant breeders.
