•International guidelines recommend optimal preoxygenation in all patients, so it is still important.•The Oxygen Reserve Index (ORI) is a novel pulse oximeter-based nondimensional index that alerts in advance from a desaturation.•THRIVE could maintain oxygen saturation for significant periods of time after commencement of apnea.
