Template-free synthesis of multifunctional carbonaceous microcone forests

•Forests of vertically aligned carbonaceous microcones are fabricated directly on a nickel mesh by self-assembly.•The fabricated composite exhibits superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity.•The fabricated composite exhibits pH responsivity.•The composite is expected to find use in a wide range of fields and applications.
