•Urchin-like ZnO-Au@CdS microspheres with enhanced PEC property was evaluated.•The introduction of Au NPs significantly enhanced the PEC property.•The bioetching of CdS NPs leaded to a decrease of the PCE intensity.•Mediator-free and interference-free detection was realized using bioetching strategies.
