Failure to detect an association between self-reported traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer's disease neuropathology and dementia.

•Remote history of self-reported traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness was not related to Alzheimer's disease neuropathologic changes.•Self-reported traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness was largely unrelated to other neurodegenerative diseases.•Self-reported traumatic brain injury with loss of consciousness did not predict baseline or change in dementia severity or cognitive function in participants with Alzheimer's disease neuropathologic changes.
