•Metal-clay based polyethylene nanocomposite monofilaments were prepared.•Ag, Cu and ZnO nanoparticles decorated montmorillonite clay were used.•Montmorillonite acted as a heterogeneous nucleating agent in HDPE.•Ag based nanocomposites showed best antimicrobial behavior followed by Cu and Zn.
