•Rats subjected to RSPS showed anxiety-like behavior and cognitive impairments.•The expression of BDNF, p-TrkB and p-ERK in the amygdala was significantly increased after RSPS exposure.•Activation of Sigma-1 receptor effectively reduced PTSD-related behavioral abnormalities.
