•Equine synoviocytes incorporate both EPA and DHA in significant quantities.•DHA uptake leads to significant synthesis of a number of putative pro-resolving docosanoids.•EPA and DHA abrogate the expression of several osteoarthritis markers in reIL-1β- stimulated macrophages.•Docosanoids resolvin D1 and D2, maresin 1and PDX inhibit gene expression of several osteoarthritis markers in reIL-1β-stimulated macrophages.
