Electrochemical epoxidation of olefins

Propene and the four isomeric butenes are selectively oxidized to the respective epoxides by reaction with electrachemically generated silver(II)-pyridine ions. From kinetic studies, the epoxidation was derived to involve the transfer of an electrophilic oxygen atom from a transient silver(III)-oxide complex to the homogeneously dissolved olefin.
