The role of memory and language ability in children's production of two-clause sentences containing before and after.

•We elicited children’s production of two-clause sentences linked by before and after.•Children had most difficulty in producing reverse order sentences linked by after.•Performance was more strongly linked to language knowledge than memory capacity.•The role of language knowledge was most pronounced in a more pure production task.
