•An insulating cover for direct absorption molten salt receivers is presented.•The cover consists of optically transparent floating hollow fused silica spheres.•Heat losses are reduced 51% in open tank receivers at 500 °C.•The breakthrough concept enables higher temperatures in liquid-based receivers.
