Design of hybrid systems with in-situ product removal from fermentation broth: case study for 2-phenylethanol production

•During microbial bioproduction of 2-phenylethanol strong product inhibition occurs.•Two batch configurations and three hybrid systems are presented and compared.•Production rate, cost of operation units, raw materials and energy are considered.•Hybrid systems perform better than traditional batch systems.•Hybrid systems without microfiltration unit have higher efficiency.
