•Demand perturbations are a novel way to integrate uncertainty in employee scheduling.•Two integer programming models are proposed for quickly finding robust schedules.•The models substantially improve the schedule quality compared to a non-robust model.•Including demand uncertainty in employee scheduling is extremely valuable.
