A benzoxazine/substituted borazine composite coating: A new resin for improving the corrosion resistance of the pristine benzoxazine coating applied on aluminum

•Benzoxazine-substituted borazine coatings were applied on aluminum and thermally cured.•Obtained microstructures show two phases, coarsening with the borazine concentration.•The borazine derivative increases the hydrophobicity of the generated composite.•Corrosion properties of the composites are strongly related to the microstructure.•For the lowest concentration (0.5 wt% borazine) a durable corrosion barrier is obtained.
