•Investigating early cortical processing of vection-inducing stimuli using ERPs.•Vection ratings varied across different movement patterns of the stimulation.•P2 and N2 were elicited by movement onset of the visual input.•Variations in the ERP amplitudes mirrored some of the variations of the ratings.•Early cortical processing of movement onset may trigger vection.
