•Dichromate induces ROS accumulation by altering the antioxidant system that causes cell/tissue damages.•Ethylene signaling and biosynthesis are induced under high Cr(VI) levels in the aerial parts of Arabidopsis thaliana.•Ethylene mediates Cr(VI) induced ROS accumulation by altering the antioxidant system.•A functioning model for the Cr(VI)-induced crosstalk between ethylene and ROS mediated morph-physiological changes.
