Estimation of solar heat gain using illumination sensor measurements

•Passive solar heat gain into a space can be estimated from indoor illumination measurements.•Strong correlation was found between solar heat gain and indoor illumination.•This strong correlation was validated in two significantly different testbeds.•Does not require any additional hardware installation or any knowledge of building properties.•Indoor illumination sensors can also capture the spatial distribution of heat gain.
