Experimental research on the effective heating strategies for a phase change material based power battery module

•Two FAC and SP heating strategies are designed for a PCM-based power battery pack.•Several evaluation factors are developed to compare the performance of the strategies.•The FAC strategy has been optimized by constructing a “close-ended” hot air cycle.•The SP heating strategy demonstrates the best heating performance.
