Investigation of an image processing method of step-index multimode fiber specklegram and its application on lateral displacement sensing

•The fiber specklegrams are treated as different types of textures.•Phase spectra of the specklegrams are analysed by Gray level co-occurrence matrix.•Experimental results show the features vary linearly with the lateral displacement.•The method exhibits good robustness.
