•Simple two step synthesis of heterodihydrotetracenes from dibenzodioxins.•Strong absorption and emission signals close to 500 nm and 600 nm respectively.•Selective in vitro HeLa cell toxicity, inert towards normal HaCaT cell lines.•Diazadihydrotetracene emission useful in microscopic live HeLa cell imaging.
