•The synthesis of thiol-terminated diacetylenes reported herein proceeds in 75–80% overall yields.•Used sequential ‘acetylene zipper’ reaction, a Sonagashira coupling procedure for diactylene formation.•Thioacetate product allows long term storage without resorting to using the disulfides.
