•In mammals, the mesentery is continuous along the entire length of intestine.•Intestinal looping, herniation and return into the peritoneal cavity are key events.•Adhesion of the mesentery and peritoneal wall is seen in primates.•Insufficient growth of intestinal loops is observed in nonrotation.•Toldt’s fascia may represent fused mesothelial surfaces.
