•N-doped hierarchically porous carbon (HNC) materials were prepared by sol-gel route.•Abundant nitrogen- and oxygen-containing groups are also detected on the HNC materials.•HNC materials are effective adsorbents for removing Pb2+, Cd2+ ions from wastewater.•The excellent adsorption property is related to the distinct features of the HNC materials
