•Two integration alternatives of CO2 capture for iron and steel are evaluated.•Heat availability analysis is carried out with regards to technology readiness.•High level integration of CO2 capture with MEA has a lower specific heat demand.•High level integration shifts gas usage, releasing more excess heat for capture.
