•The Gallium selenide/Tin disulfide is fabricated and characterized in detailed (Raman and AFM).•The THz absorption spectrum of the GaSe/SnS2 saturable absorber is demonstrated.•Passively Q-switched Nd:GdTaO4 laser by GaSe/SnS2 saturable absorber is achieved.
