Identifying and assessing the potential for conflict between landscape values and development preferences on the Faroe Islands

•We link landscape values and development preferences to elicit land-use conflicts.•Faroese residents appreciate landscapes for natural and cultural values.•Perceived landscape values are broader than most classification frameworks.•Tourism development had highest potential for conflicts on the Faroe Islands.•Potential for land-use conflicts is concentrated to only a few sites.
