Scheduling elective surgery patients considering time-dependent health urgency: Modeling and solution approaches

•This problem considers patient health condition and operating room overtime.•We introduce the idea of maximizing the minimum patient health condition.•We propose a systematic way to allow sicker patients to have early access to surgery.•The SAA method is implemented and the SAA solution quality is discussed.•A fastest ascent local search and a tabu search are developed and compared.
