•A new synthetic method for zinc-methylphosphonates under hydro(solvo)thermal condition is described.•A preformed coordination assembly, zinc bis(O- methyl methylphosphonate) is used as a precursor.•A rational synthesis of ladder-like inorganic framework is achieved by this approach.
