•Intrusion of carbonated water in CSTR with Cu- and Zn- modified model soils.•The dynamics of metal release from soil is regarded as a two-site sorption process.•Depending on the degree of acidification, a fraction of metal is released to water.•The CO2 ex-solution may change drastically measured parameters such as pH and Eh.•Estimated kinetic parameters depend on method and model assumptions.
