•Laterally resolved SVET and MEC measurements on low-angle cross sections.•Active zone spreads from surface to inner coating region with exposure time in Cl−.•Zn(OH)2 is present only on the original weathered coating surface.•ZnO and (Zn5(OH)8Cl2) are present on all coating regions.•(Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2 is only present on the Fe/Zn interface where [Zn2+] and pH are high.
