Colour polymorphic Gouldian finches avoid complex backgrounds but prefer simple camouflage colours over white backgrounds

•Many birds blend into their natural environment which is difficult in captivity.•We investigated background matching and complex backgrounds in Gouldian finches.•Gouldian finches preferred simple green over complex patterned backgrounds.•Green backgrounds were preferred over white backgrounds often used in laboratories.•Background colour can be an important enrichment.
