A positive response of rice rhizosphere to alternate moderate wetting and drying irrigation at grain filling stage

•AMWD increased grain yield and retarded root senescence compared to CI regime.•AMWD regime periodically changed the soil pH and Eh in turn increased a proportion of aerobic bacteria.•The cycling and transfer of nutrients in rhizosphere soil were accelerated by the AMWD process.
