•Catalytic performance of Co3O4/Al2O3 was enhanced by reduction-oxidation pretreatment.•The surface reconstruction occurred during the reduction-oxidation pretreatment process.•The size of Co3O4 particles markedly decreased after reduction-oxidation pretreatment.
