•Morphologies of Cu2O particles could be tuned by histidine-containing peptides.•Cuprous oxide synthesized with CN225 showed the best photocatalytic activity due to its size and morphology.•Different coordinating structures of peptide to Cu2+ ions dominated the nucleation and crystal growth.
