Growth rate maximization in fed-batch processes using high order sliding controllers and observers based on cell density measurement

•A new extremum seeking scheme is proposed to optimize specific growth rates.•A fast and robust gradient estimation is obtained from cell density measurement.•A dither-less and smooth response of the growth rate is achieved.•The controller can reject bounded disturbances.•Lyapunov stability and tuning hints are derived for the controller.
