•A new extremum seeking scheme is proposed to optimize specific growth rates.•A fast and robust gradient estimation is obtained from cell density measurement.•A dither-less and smooth response of the growth rate is achieved.•The controller can reject bounded disturbances.•Lyapunov stability and tuning hints are derived for the controller.
