Additive free, room temperature direct homogeneous catalytic carbon dioxide hydrogenation in aqueous solution using an iron(II) phosphine catalyst

•Carbon dioxide can be directly hydrogenated to formic acid without additives.•This homogeneous catalytic reaction takes place in aqueous solution at room temperature.•The reaction is catalyzed by an iron(II)-phosphine complex.
