•Investigation of triaromatic dimethylcholesteroids (TA-DMC) in Arctic Norway.•TA-DMC was detected in Late Permian organic rich rocks of the Ørret Fm.•TA-DMC in Late Permian rocks possibly linked to deposition in deep shelf settings.•The TA-DMC ratio needs local calibration for oil-source rock correlation.
