Characterization of forest carbon stocks at the landscape scale in the Argentine Dry Chaco

•Functional traits of forest communities determine carbon stock attributes.•We analyzed three carbon attributes of forests at regional scale.•Tall, dense and fast growing forests are on northwestern of Dry Chaco.•Low mean temperatures and more precipitations maximizes size and persistence of carbon.
