Cyclic small rodents in boreal forests and the effects of even-aged forest management: Patterns and predictions from a long-term study in southeastern Norway

•We sampled small rodents during 39 years in a commercial boreal forest in Norway.•There, numbers were lower in plantations than in clearcuts and uncut, old forest.•Conversion to plantations lowers the biomass of voles in the forested landscape.•Fewer voles in secondary forest will greatly affect predator-prey relationships.
