•TEG system harvests energy from thermal energy released during composting process.•The study revealed that the electrical outputs vary for different thermal gradients.•The TEG system delivers a voltage of ∼11.3 V and a power density of ∼175 mW/m2.•We discuss the prospects and challenges of the TEG system for future developments.
