•Resins from B. Bipinnata, B. excelsa, B. grandifolia, B. laxiflora, B. penicillata and B. stenophylla collected in Mexico were analyzed by means of FTIR.•PCA was coupled to FTIR data in order to establish a classification model for unknown samples.•Classification model based on FTIR was applied to suggest the botanical origin of copals from Aztec site of Templo Mayor.
